The Splendors of Tuscan Gardens

For this journey, we will focus on visiting the magnificent formal gardens in and around the city. Based on classical Roman precepts and perfected in Tuscany during the Renaissance, Italian design had a direct influence on gardens in England and France. While fountains, cascades and statuary are essential elements of the giardino all’italiano, the true artistry is based on symmetry and geometry used to impose order upon nature. The garden of a Tuscan, Roman or Venetian villa was, in effect, an organic extension of itself.

We will visit villas and their gardens in and around Florence created by the wealthy ruling class during the Renaissance. Many of these properties enjoy magnificent views out over the Tuscan countryside, which form the backdrop for their beautiful gardens.

While this is a trip that mainly focuses on gardens, there will be the added art, art history, food and culture!

* Day trips to visit some of Italy’s most historical and renown villas and gardens

* We will explore a 17th century garden in Florence and visit the 1000 year old church of San Miniato.
